Karen comes to BGS Law after 21 years at the State’s Attorney’s Office in Montgomery County. As an Assistant State’s Attorney she handled cases ranging from District Court offenses to serious traffic cases to all types of felony cases. She has worked extensively with cases involving drugs, alcohol, and mental health issues. She handled high level drug cases for many years and was the go to for the Police Department as well as other prosecutors in the office when it came to questions about how to handle a drug investigation and prosecution. She will carry that knowledge into defense work.
Karen was the prosecutor responsible for handling the Problem Solving Courts within Montgomery County, which included Drug Court, Mental Health Court, and DUI Court. Her experience within those will assist in all types of cases that have overlapping substance use disorders or mental health issues.
For every case Karen handled she was responsible for each one from start to finish. This included all court hearings, motions to suppress, and trials. She has had approximately 100 jury trials and is well known to the judges of Montgomery County. She has a strong understanding of the Fourth Amendment and other issues relating to the evidence that may be part of any criminal case.
Karen also worked to develop and oversee a Gun Prosecution Unit at the State’s Attorney’s Office. She is very knowledgeable when it comes to issues relating to the firearms laws in Maryland and how other types of offenses or findings can impact your rights to possess a firearm in the future in Maryland.
